- I want a light engraving, how do I do that?
Products from our offer that come with engraving options can be personalized in our unique creator. This handy tool allows you to customise the engraving design to suit your needs in just a few simple steps. The creator enables you to design a product for your specific requirements, such as a box with a company logo or a graphic tailored to a particular occasion. Additionally, the creator allows you to upload your own graphic file or use the extensive pattern library to create a design that meets all your expectations.
Any project you create can be saved for future use.
There’s also an option to share a link with another person, for example, for the end customer to review the order.
The tool is very easy and intuitive to use, but it’s worth exploring all its features before you start designing.
First steps in the creator
You can access the creator from the shop’s homepage or from the page of the selected product. Once the configuration window opens, you’ll find the ‘Product configuration’ tab on the right – once it’s expanded, you can select a product from the list and then adjust the order options, such as the type of USB drive or box filling. In the center of the creator, there is a product visualization where you can drag and drop selected decorations. The configuration covers both the front and back of the product, and if you’re ordering a set, you can decorate both the wooden box and the wooden USB drive.
On the creator’s page, you’ll find several options to help you create a personalized design. These include
- Text – the icon on the left side of the application in the screenshot above. This allows you to select a font. Once you have chosen a font, a sample text will appear on the product image, which you can double-click to enter any words you wish. The corners of the text box allow you to resize, rotate and move the text within the image.
Once you have added text to your product, an additional ‘Your Text’ tab will appear. This tab is located below the “Layers” tab on the right-hand side of the creator. Here you can format the text by selecting bold, italic, underline and alignment options. There’s also an option to adjust the line spacing, rotate the text by a certain number of degrees, centre the text and set the exact size in pixels.
If we’ve added too many layers of text during the design process, we can delete them using the ‘Delete’ button. - Cliparts – these are graphics grouped into categories that we’ve provided for free to make the design process easier. Available options include wreaths, hearts and ornaments, which are perfect for wedding projects and other celebration-related designs.
You’ll find options for resizing and tilting clipart in the Clipart tab, which appears to the right of the creator after you’ve selected an image. This is where you’ll find the default patterns: Clipart > Default Patterns (at the bottom 🙂 )
Text, clipart, shapes and custom graphics can be added multiple times. Once added, a new layer is automatically created and can be edited in the Layers tab. Each layer can be centred, rotated or deleted using the Trash icon or the Delete key. Shapes – similar to clipart, these are free graphic files that can enhance your design. Shapes can be used as part of a frame or as a stand-alone decoration.
- Templates – Registered shop customers can save their design as a template to use for future orders or leave unfinished for later.
This option is particularly useful for repeat orders where you need to change the text but not the design. This is often the case when designing wedding boxes, where specific graphics and the company logo are placed on the box and only the names and wedding date are changed.
There’s also a feature where you can download a link to edit the template or send it to a client for approval.
Links are valid indefinitely.
- Upload – the ‘Upload’ option on the left hand side of the application allows you to upload your own graphic. This is particularly useful for companies wanting to create USB drives with their logo, as well as individuals wanting to fully personalise a product by adding their own artwork. Simply use the ‘Add File’ option and select an image file.
The graphic file uploaded from your computer must be colourless, as black colours will be read and burned by the laser, but white colours will not. It’s best to convert the file to greyscale (jpg, png, svg) before uploading.
If you choose to upload jpg or png files, make sure they are high resolution, no less than 700dpi, or upload a vector svg file.
Once uploaded, click on the file to place it on the product.
- Layers – Text, clipart, shapes and even custom graphics can be added multiple times. Once added to the project, a new layer is automatically created and can be edited in the Layers panel. Each layer can be centred, rotated or deleted using the Trash icon or Delete key.
- Product colours – when you personalise a box, you can also change the colours of the product. The colour change option is available at the top of the creator above the project you’re working on.
- Change the product – while editing, you can also change the selected product using the menu on the right. Changing the product doesn’t delete the design you’ve created.
How do I make a good engraving?
- To make a good engraving, you should start by preparing the file in greyscale, which can be done in our creator or a graphic program. Remember that what is black in the file will be engraved and what is white will not. Grey and near-black colours will also be applied to the product, so it’s important to make sure the file is properly prepared beforehand.
- A greyscale file should be at least 700 dpi and saved in JPG or png format.
- dpi (dots per inch) – the number of pixels per inch. This unit is used to measure the resolution of images produced by printers, plotters, film exposure, etc.
- For vector files, upload an .svg file.
Light engraving can be achieved by using the Light Engraving option, which is available for certain colours. Select this option from the Add-ons on the right. If you want to see how it looks, check out the colours – just upload a dark logo and select the light engraving option – that’s it 🙂
Placing an order
Once you’ve finished personalising your chosen product, you can place your order directly in the creator using the “Buy now” or “Add to cart” option.
On the product page, you can also complete your order without using the configurator – you’ll find ready-made designs that only require text to be entered in the appropriate form field.
At Wooden Shop, we make sure to offer all possible solutions to help the customer create a personal, completely unique product.
